Words from Atlantic A&R and So So Def Publisher -

Artists and producers pay attention - Here is an article posted on Serge's site www.exclusiveaddict.com about what he is seeing in the music industry and what he is looking for:

"HAS THE BAR BEEN SET TOO LOW????

I'VE BEEN JUDGING AND ATTENDING A LOT OF SHOWCASES LATELY. I'VE BEEN TO A FEW BEAT BATTLES AND IT SEEMS LIKE I'M ENCOUNTERING THE SAME ISSUE. THE COMMON DENOMINATOR BETWEEN THE SHOWCASES AND THE BEAT BATTLES IS THESE ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS ARE COMPARING THEMSELVES TO THE WRONG PEOPLE. NO DISRESPECT TO SOULJA BOY OR GUCCI MANE BECAUSE I'M A FAN OF BOTH, BUT ARTISTS FEEL LIKE THEY CAN MAKE MUSIC THAT'S SIMILAR TO GUCCI AND SOULJA BOY AND FEEL LIKE THEIR MUSIC IS HOT. THEY FEEL LIKE WELL MY BEAT IS BETTER THAN "CRANK THAT" OR MY SONG IS BETTER THAN "BRICKS." THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT SOULJA BOY AND GUCCI HAVE PERFECTED THEIR CRAFT AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN SOUND. THEY ARE GOING INTO THE BOOTH AND TRYING TO MAKE DANCE SONGS OR VERY SIMPLE RECORDS OVER CHEAP SOUNDING BEATS AND TALK ABOUT MONEY AND DRUGS AND FEEL LIKE, "IF GUCCI CAN PULL IT OFF, SO CAN I." THEY TRY TO OUTSELL MORE DRUGS THAN JEEZY OR RICK ROSS.

INSTEAD OF LOOKING UP TO GUYS WITH LONGEVITY LIKE JAY-Z, LL COOL J, OR KANYE WEST. SOME MIGHT FEEL THEIR MUSIC IS HOT BECAUSE THEY REALLY DO WHAT THEY ARE RAPPING ABOUT. THE PRODUCERS ARE LOOKING UP TO SOULJA BOY, SHAWTY REDD, DJ TOOMP, AND THE RUNNERS, WHICH ARE ALL GREAT PRODUCERS. BUT THEY FORGET ABOUT DR. DRE, TIMBALAND, AND THE NEPTUNES. I FEEL THE PROBLEM WITH MUSIC RIGHT NOW IS THAT THESE NON SUBSTANCE RECORDS ARE MAKING THERE WAY THROUGH THE AIRWAVES. IT GIVES A LOT OF THESE ASPIRING ARTISTS WITH NO TALENT HOPE THAT THEY CAN MAKE SIMILAR TYPES OF MUSIC AND MAKE IT BIG IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. THEY GET THEIR LOCAL PRODUCER WHO JUST LEARNED HOW TO DO BEATS ON FRUITY LOOPS WITH MINIMAL KITS, COME UP WITH TERRIBLE RECORDS, RECORD 20 SONGS, PUT 'EM ALL ON A CD, CALL IT A MIXTAPE, PRESS UP CDS AND PASS 'EM OUT TO EVERYONE AND FEEL LIKE THEY'VE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING, OR HAVE A MOVEMENT (LOL). WHAT IS THAT???? I WANT TO KNOW DO YOU GUYS AGREE THAT THE REASON WHY THE QUALITY OF MUSIC SUCKS RIGHT NOW IS BECAUSE A LOT OF GARBAGE IS MAKING ITS WAY TO THE AIRWAVES AND THE ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS ARE LOOKING UP TO AND COMPARING THEIR MATERIAL TO THE WRONG PEOPLE? "

Day 26 debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts with their new album Forever In A Day. According to Neilsen Soundscan, the group sold about 113,000 copies during the week of debut. The album is led by the single, "Imma Put It On Her" ft. Diddy and Yung Joc. I'm surprised that they didn't sell more in the first week. Miley Cyrus took the No. 1 spot with the Hannah Montana Soundtrack.

Dawn is the Last One Standing..

by

Last night on the Making the Band Finale: Part 1, Diddy released D. Woods, Shannon, Aubrey, and Aundrea from Danity Kane. The last girl standing is Dawn Richard, who will remain on Bad Boy Records as a solo artist. Aundrea decided to stick with Danity Kane, but unfortunately Diddy believed that she wanted to give up too many times. As a result, he gave her the axe. Also, Diddy stated, that if Danity Kane is ever reformed, that Dawn will be the only member included in the group. What do you think about his decision? The other part of the finale will air on April 26th.

Diddy Reveals The Fate of Danity Kane

The fate of Danity Kane will be revealed soon in a two-part episode of Making the Band 4. The first episode of the finale will air tonight and the second episode will air on April 26. Here's a few clips from tonights show...

Ummm Since When Did JT Start Producing???

Now, I've seen Justin's production credits on a lot of songs with Timbaland, but I didn't think that he was actually producing. It looks as if I was wrong. Justin is actually producing and he's actually not bad. Check him out here in the studio with super producer Polow Da Don. He's definitely learned a thing or two, especially working with Timbaland. I see you Justin. Haha!!

Eminem Disses Amy Winehouse???

We all know that Eminem loves to take shots at his fellow entertainers and artists and Amy Winehouse is no exception. Sources reveal that the rapper has taken shots at Amy in his new single, "We Made You," with the following line:

"You're my Amy, I'm your Blake/ Matter fact make me a birthday cake/ With a saw blade in it to make my jail break/ Baby, I think you just met your soul mate."
Apparently, Eminem wanted to collaborate with with Amy on his upcoming album Relapse, especially since they both have struggled with addiction and substance abuse. Eminem emphathizes with the Soul singer and reached out to her for a collaboration. Unfortunately, the pairing of the two on a record did not happen as Ms. Winehouse declined the offer. Sources say that she was flattered by the offer and is a big fan of Hip-Hop and Eminem. However, with her current struggles, she could not go through with the collaboration. As a result, Eminem dissed her on his new track. However, reports say their is no love lost between the two. Eminem understands that she has been through a tough time in her career and needed time to get herself together. Eminem still hopes that they will collaborate on a future project.

Billboard Charts for Week of 4/17/2009

This week on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, The Black Eyed Peas rule with their new single "Boom Boom Pow." In fact, the track entered the charts at No. 1 and is their first No. 1 record, which is suprising. Their upcoming album, The END ("The Energy Never Dies"), will be released on June 9, 2009. Flo Rida's single "Right Round" is currently No. 3 on the charts. "Right Round" is the first single from his album R.O.O.T.S and is his second #1 smash hit. Flo Rida's second single "Sugar" features the talented miss Wynter Gordon, who I had the pleasure of interviewing last year right here at STAYONDECK.COM. The single is also currently rising up the charts and is probably on it's way to being a top #10 smash. Soulja Boy takes the No. 4 spot with his single, "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" ft. R&B singer Sammie. Jamie Foxx continues to "blame it on the alcohol" with his single, "Blame It" ft. T-Pain and takes the No. 5 spot respectively. T.I comes in at N. 6, with his single, "Dead and Gone" ft. Justin Timberlake. Also, Kid Cudi finishes out the charts as far as R&B and Hip-Hop is concerned with his single, "Day 'N' Nite." His debut album will hit stores this summer. Below I will post the results for the R&B and Hip-Hop chart listings:

1. Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain-"Blame It"
2. Keri Hilson ft. Lil Wayne-"Turnin Me On"
3. T.I. ft. Justin Timberlake-"Dead and Gone"
4. The Dream-"Rockin' That Thang"
5. Soulja Boy Tell 'em ft. Sammie-"Kiss Me Thru The Phone"

Nina Sky-"On Some B*llsh*t"

"ON SOME BULL..." OFFICIAL VIDEO

Nina Sky's new video recently premiered. I'm a big Nina Sky fan, but this track really doesn't do it for me. I would've released another track as a single. Maybe this one will grow on me, but it's just "okay" to me. Regardless, I'm looking forward to their upcoming album.

What Happened To Kellz?

Last year, R. Kelly was supposed to come out with 12 Play: Fourth Quarter. However, it was never officially released to retail circuits. Well, it seems the R&B crooner is going back to the drawing board. After the album was leaked online last year, he renamed the album and is recording new tracks in Atlanta, GA. I assume Kellz wasn't happy about the leak either judging from this statement made in an Atlanta club, "I'm working on a new album and I'm calling that muthafucka Untitled. Y'all call it what y'all want." I would be mad too if I had to re-record an album that I worked on for months due to premature release. A song titled, "Make Me Love Her" ft. Plies is rumored to be single potential. That track was actually leaked online earlier this year, but was pulled. As of yet, Akon, Sean Paul, Lil Jon, Ron Browz, Flo Rida, Danja, and Polow Da Don. I am sure there will be many updates as news of this album unfolds.

Video Premiere from Eminem- "We Made You"

Eminem recently premiered his new video "We Made You," which, of course, was produced by Dr. Dre. It seems Eminem is sticking with his Slim Shady persona. I am kinda surprised he came out like this. I think he needed to come across a little different. The video is a little funny though...

Amy Winehouse Will Debut Songs In May..

Sultry Soul singer Amy Winehouse will be releasing some new songs in May, according to her official website. Her official website stated that she would preview some of her new songs during "Island Records 50 Year celebrations" to be held at the Shepherds Bush Empire on May 31. In her own words, the British superstar stated:

"I hope to play some new songs. I'm busy in the studio at the minute, too busy to go out and have much fun really. I can't even play pool in my favourite pool hall. It's probably for the best though. It's probably for the best. I only end up getting arrested for assault when I go out these days."
Also, Amy will be performing at the 18th Annual Saint Lucia Jazz Festival on May 8. During the event, which will take place on May 2 - 10, she will be accompanied by Patti LaBelle, Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan and Chicago among others. Reportedly, the singer has been recording in St. Lucia and working with the talented Salaam Remi for her third project. The rumor is that her upcoming album will primarily be reggae-influenced. If that is true, then I'm excited. All of you Stayondeck readers out there know that I'm a huge fan so a reggae album would be dope! She can definitely pull it off.

Jadakiss Interview with Jessie Maguire..

Rapper Jadakiss is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album The Last Kiss tomorrow. He took the time out of his busy schedule to interview with Jessie Maguire. In the interview, he talks about his album, of course, The Lox, slaughterhouse, and more. Check it out!

Unsigned Artist Spotlight

Check out this new artist that's building up a buzz. I will start posting information about unsigned/emerging artist every week so stay tuned! Email u at stayondeck@gmail.com if you would like to be considered for the Unsigned Artist Spotlight. Anyway, Wish debuted this track recently and recently got 45,000 spins on Singersroom.com within or 4 days. This track was produced by BEATBANGGAHZ. You can read her bio below and listen to her track as well..

Like a diamond in the ruff, Wish, the Unsigned emerging artist from Baltimore, MD is here to conquer. "It's been a long road even up until this very point, even without a deal. It's rough, but I don't plan on quitting. Ever." Wish's piercing alto is the remnants of her everchanging story....

It began at about 7 years old, where Wish grew up on the church choir along with family & neighborhood friends. This was her 1st attempt to grab the mic. At the end of that very 1st solo, she knew music was going to be a major part of her life. And so it was. Many church, school, & neighborhood events, talent/fashion shows followed as she continued to perform.

Often described as a "high pitched raspy alto", you can feel the conviction from her soul. "I want people to know that I mean every word I sing, even if I sing a song a million times, they gotta know by the time I'm done, I meant it all. I want people to believe me. If I don't believe me, then who will?" Studying favorites like Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Queen, Mariah, & Beyonce, these are all artists who possess the epidemy of "feeling" and are great at conveying pure emotion to an audience. "Who doesn't want to be great? Of course I do."

Growing up as an only child was easy. "When I got out of school, my friends would go play hopscotch, I would go home, do my homework, and put my headphones on for the rest of the night. My favorite CD was Mary J. Blige "Whats the 411". I played it until it got all scratched up. Then I'd end up in class late the next morning because I decided I wanted to have a "singing contest" with one of my classmates in the yard. Funny, but true."

Skool Gurl Diaries is Wish's 1st solo attempt, after donning in 2 girl groups, she found that the hard work gained from those experiences has prepped her enough to stand on her very own. "Groups are a learning experience. It was a true example of sisterhood and taught me how to work cooperatively with people. Musically, it helped with harmonies, knowing how to blend, and just working off of each others energies. It was really fun time in my life."

Now in NJ, the solo sensation is putting the finishing touches her album. Best friend/songwriter Donny Roc, has written all songs except two, on the album. "I feel the chemistry between he and I cannot be forced. It just happens. We naturally enjoy what we do." The two recorded a plethora of songs before choosing the final 15. "We blindly went into the studio, not knowing what we would come up with, and Donny wrote everything on the spot, & out came a new sound. Wish's sound!"

Putting Wish in a genre, may be the hardest thing to do. "I'm inspired by Rock, R&B, Jazz, Gospel, and Hip Hop. To put one's self in a box, is the worst thing you can do. I love to have fun with it all." Skool Gurl Diaries is a fusion of R&B/Alternative music, with some Pop ballads.

What you can expect from Skool Gurl Diaries are memorable melodies, brilliant harmonies, attacking vocals & ad libs, and a collection of short stories that most of us at one point in time have related to or be able to relate to. Loosely based on the "School Girl" mantra, each character Wish portrays in the album has her own story. Cheerleader. Nerd. Prom Queen. Everyday chick.

"When I was in school, I held a lot of things back. Now I think its my turn to speak for the girls, women, & whoever else may have had trouble interpreting their feelings. I used to feel like I didn't fit in at school, & I think people think they're alone when in a moment like that. Young people have issues, and they need to feel like they're not wrong for feeling certain ways or for being different. I wanna speak to those people."
