DTP Splitting Ties with Def Jam?!?

It has been speculated for a long time that Ludacris' company DTP may split ways with Def Jam. Earlier in the week, Ludacris invited a bunch of industry heads including La Reid, out to an event where the DTP RnB acts performed. From what I hear, the performance went south in front of the wrong people. DTP artists Bobby Valentino, Shareefa, and Steph Jones were dropped from the Def Jam label a couple days following the performance. There are also rumors from inside sources that Def Jam plans on clearing out all of DTP except for Luda. What move DTP makes next will be interesting... Do they pull Luda and DTP off of Def Jam completely and move the camp to another label? Is this contractually possible? Do they leave the RnB and other acts out to dry and keep Luda on Def Jam? Let's face it, Ludacris is the negotiation power. Will any other label be willing to carry DTP even if they get Luda with the deal? Certain artists such as Chingy and Bobby Valentino have shown past success in selling albums. What will Luda do? Should be interesting to see how this unfolds but as of now Bobby Valentino, Shareefa, and Steph Jones have all been dropped from Def Jam. Stay tuned here to get exclusive interviews regarding this matter.

Look out tomorrow for the EXCLUSIVE NO ID interview. The hip-hop legend/Kanye West mentor -NO ID sits down and talks with music producer Bill Jabr from the clutch and one of the creators of this site.

Yes Mariah.. I will "touch your body" etc. etc. etc. as R Kelly would say

New Mariah Carey video.. I like how they put this nerdy looking guy in the video. The video really appeals to the blue collar man. Even though it really doesn't at all. It looks more like Mariah Carey is taking an afternoon to hang out with her little friend. I don't think they even let this guy touch her body once in the video. Maybe he doesn't want to touch her body.. I think they are trying to go straight to vh1 with this one. Church

NEW HOV video - I know -- American Gangster is a classic album.. if you haven't bought it yet then you are off deck.

and what would a post be without some Grown and Sexy Fat Joe - I won't tell .. this song is big among the grown and sexys like myself

EXCLUSIVE interview PJ Butta - The Power 92 Los Angeles DJ/ songwriter/web site mogul/teacher/ and A&R to the people...

How does he do it all in one day you might ask? How do records get broken on the radio? He had all the answers for me..

Sound Bite---How long have you been a Radio Dj and what led you to pursue it as a career?
PJ- been a radio DJ for over 15 years. I actually wanted to behind the scenes in the music biz as an A&R or a producer but there weren't any classes for that in college so I took the next closest thing which was radio broadcasting. I got in an internship at a radio station and was quickly hired and was put on the air so I was kinda derailed from my original goal lol

Sound bite---Very cool.. So what do you feel like were the key factors that made you a successful radio dj and personality? Why do you think they chose you so quick for the job?

PJ - first off it was the voice. I have that "radio voice" and i've never been a groupie or star struck. i just go in and do my job and be consistent. I think my overall "cool " personality and the fact that I broke new music when no one else did were factors in my success

Sound Bite---That's a good point.. It seems like so many dj's are afraid to step out of the box and promote something they believe in. You have been known for breaking hit records. How do you go about breaking records? Are you influenced by the relationships you have with people or is it as simple as you believing a record is hot and squeezing it into your rotations?

PJ-- Both. relationships help to get records first. but if it wasnt hot I wouldnt play it. I would always ask what else you got and pick the hottest joint to play. As was the case with Bobby Valentino. I have a relationship with producers Tim & Bob who did Bobby's 1st album... they hit me up and wanted to play me something. They played me what they thought the single was and it was cool but when I heard "Slow Down" I was like I gotta play that one NOW!

Sound Bite---That's crazy so you were really the first one that picked slow down? What made you gravitate to that record? Can you give me any new upcoming hit predictions that the people should look out for?

PJ--
For me what caught my ear was the sound was different. It wan't like anything on the radio. And the reference to "melrose"... which is a huge shoppin strip in LA... I knew was gonna be a hit with folks in LA
--
Hit predictions: Hot Rod of G-Unit got a club SMASH called "I Like To Fuck"... if it ever comes out and the right songs make it... Frankie J's upcoming album will change the game a with a new sound... anything from Shawty Lo... and out West a filipino rapper named Roscoe Umali is killin it. Roscoe did a joint called Live It Up with E-40 and Bobby Valentino which is killlin out here

Sound bite---oh yeah I heard about that.. cool.. ok just a few more questions.. What Current Projects are you working on outside of radio?

PJ---well I'm a songwriter who primarily works with producers The Avila Brothers. We're just finished up Frankie J and Sean Garretts projects... currently working on Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas... Usher and Jamie Foxx suppose to come in. I'm helping out on a Hip Hop compilation and some other projects on a record label situation I might be involved with...
I also DJ alot of clubs around LA so I'm busy doing that... and I'm a college professor so the semester started and I'm back molding the minds of our future talent
I'm a professor by day and rockstar by night lol

Sound bite -- wow! souds like you are extra busy. I have a few more questions for you to wrap up pertaining to people involved and trying to break into the music industry. First of all, what advice can you give to anyone trying to pursue a career as a Dj and in the music industry? and I see from your myspace page that you are a family man. How are you able to balance your fast music industry work life with your teaching and family life ?

PJ - advice: don't let no one tell you nothing. follow your passion. do what your love. i didn't get into DJing/music for money. If that's your mentality you will lose. Also network. Meet people. Cause it is true... it's about who you know. And the people you meet will be the ones who will get you to where you need to go.
luckily I have a wife who is also in radio so she knows and understands the business which is SO helpful. But my family comes first so they have priority. But the best thing is the music business usually is a night gig so I can spend days spending time with the fam and whatever and nights DJing/studio time, etc
plus being a songwriter i can write anytime anywhere. plus being a songwriter i can write anytime anywhere.

Sound Bite - sounds like sound advice!  I have one final question for the readers and the if you have anything else to add feel free.. How do independent artists without any major push end up with a big song on radio? What is their secret? and if there is anything else you want to add or promote let me know.

PJ -- best way is to go to the mixshow DJs or get to the DJ that can play new music on the radio. Nowadays all you have to do is mp3 them don't waste money on vinyl. amd talk to them. build that relationship but don't come off as a dick like, "my shit is hot you gotta play it." build a relationship first. it 's like a chick... you gotta get to know her... wine and dine before you fuck lol. If it's hot it's gonna get played. Push it on the streets make sure it's in the clubs, mixtapes, barbershops. You gotta create your own buzz

Sound Bite - haha i feel u.. good analogy! anything else to add? any closing remarks? Thanks a lot for your time!

support good music. check out www.pjbutta.com for new music first

The state of things

Hip-hop music and culture has come a long way from its humble beginnings in the South Bronx in the early 70s. Bambaataas vision of an art-form that could be used to unite people through total freedom of expression has been commodified and perverted so much that you can take a trip to your local liquor store and buy joint papers with you favorite rappers face on the wrapper.

I’ve recently relocated to Los Angeles and decided this week to check out some spots in town. I hit up a trendy “hip-hop” spot to check out what LA had to offer. I’m not going to say the name of the place, they don’t deserve recognition, but what I experienced was frightening.

Upon entering my eyes were greeted with a hoard of hipsters in their mid twenties rocking whatever their local urbanoutfitter deemed to be “hip-hop”. The music the DJ, who must have been dropping acid, was playing was soulless modern renditions of hip-hop music from artists like Aesop Rock and whatever new artist Stones-Throw decided to put out this month. Not one person was inspired to get up out their seat and step, instead the audience sat while bobbing their heads in a trancelike state.

Have we forgotten that hip-hop music is supposed to make you feel something in your gut? Have we forgotten that it’s supposed to inspire and make you want to move?

Hip-hop isn’t something you put on Friday night, it isn’t a group of pretentious music and fashion snobs, it isn’t sold at you local mall for $35.99 plus tax.

Our culture is in serious danger of becoming what we and its pioneers strived so hard to disprove, that its nothing more but another passing fad. So to those of us who eat, breath and live hip-hop continue “pushing-along”, as Q-tip so eloquently said. To those of you who think hip-hop is wearing a certain brand or listening to rap music that accumulates to nothing more than a form of egotistical masturbation, duck-the-fuck down!

Peace, love and happiness

Day 26 Leaks.....

Knight Rider here.......these are new songs by Day 26 (Making The Band 4)

Come In(produced by The Runners)

Got Me Going

Over Now

Together(produced by B. Cox)

If I see one more Night Club looking slick ball wearing a tight Ed Hardy shirt! The worst fashion trend of all time!

For a while it was the hot pink/multi colored Camo Bathing Ape. Grown ass men from all across the club all wearing the same fake bape hoody. Now the current popular trend has taken an even greater nose dive for the worse. The fine people at Ed Hardy have managed to do a great injustice to my personal freedoms by creating mens shirts with short short sleeves that hug and fit tight in all areas. I never imagined a man's shirt design could look so clownish. I don't even like going to the club anymore. I don't, being in an environment of dudes wearing shirts with body art tattoo designs on them makes the idea of staying at home and watching the basketball game sound like an exotic adventure. So for the first fashion related post on this site I say leave the Hardy or any tattoo art related t-shirt alone. It's 2008, we are about to have flying cars around this bitch so try get on some different shit and stick to your own. Maybe let the shirt breath a little bit or something shit...

Do you think the glasses are Hardy too? Cause those look pretty cool.

RIP Static Major

It has been reported that hit songwriter Static Major has passed away.  Details have not yet been released but Static's impact and music will be remembered forever.  As one third of the group "Playa," He was responsible for writing such classics as Ginuwine - So Anxious, Poney..  Aaliyah - Resolution,  Are You That Somebody, and Rock the Boat, and Playa - Cheers to You among so many others.   In fact, most of the new Justin Timberlake songs were influenced heavily by Statics sound and swagger.. i.e. Until the End of time, What Goes Around Comes around, Cry Me a River etc.   Static was one of my favorite writers.  His influence continues to grow..

A tribute to an incredible Songwriter/Musician:

Aaliyah - Are U that Somebody

Ginuwine - Poney

Aaliyah - Rock the Boat

and finally Playa - Cheers to 2U

RIP Static!
